Nancy Cornell Ed.S., NCSP

Licensed School Psychologist

I have over 40 years of experience working as a school psychologist in K-12 settings.  My expertise is in psycho-educational assessment to identify learning difficulties (in reading, writing and math), ADHD, and socio-emotional/behavioral difficulties that impact academic performance. These results form the foundation for accommodations and interventions that enable students to learn at their potential.

Psycho-educational assessment measures cognitive abilities while identifying processing strengths and weaknesses, which enhance our understanding of students’ needs in the learning environment. This information is valuable in understanding how students learn best, and formulating recommendations for accommodations or interventions that will enable them to achieve at their potential.

In addition to my work with elementary age children identifying processing strengths and weaknesses that impact learning, I have extensive experience with adolescents. I can provide support for students coping with adolescent stressors, which are often seen in students experiencing anxiety or those on the autism spectrum. I also can provide support for students with ADHD to address weaknesses in executive functions (organization, planning, task initiation, etc.) that impact their success in the classroom.

What is psycho-educational assessment?

Psychoeducational assessment involves administering tests to measure cognitive abilities and processing skills (how well a student processes information visually or auditorily –what they see or hear). Together with measures of reading and math skills, results provide information how students best learn academic skills. For older students executive functions (how well they monitor their work, regulate attention, organize their activity, etc.) can significantly impact their success in the classroom. For some students it is important to assess how well they process social information in interpersonal interaction. This information is analyzed with results of educational assessments to understand how students’ learning impacts their academic achievement.

What is involved in psycho-educational assessment?

Specific psycho-educational assessment tools are always determined by the student needs. The tests administered vary among individual students. The purpose of the assessment is to better understand the student and their learning styles, and to provide recommendations for accommodations or interventions that best meet their needs.

I prefer to conduct assessments online, but can consider in person testing if warranted.
